Using hi-tech MRI scans; doctors can find out lumps in women that shows breast cancer now turn out to be false - Says a Dutch study.

The normal finding of the breast cancer is depending on the MRI scan and with mammography.But the recent findings of the researchers reveal that the affected women should not take any decision in advance as both of them might be commonly wrong.

Researchers found five out of six scans were wrong,“false-positives caused anxiety” - Research study published in the Annals of Oncology.Still,the medical findings suggest that MRI findings are much better than mammograms.

Magnetic resonance imaging is used in MRI scans. It is more sensitive in finding out the breast cancers in early stage of younger women even in denser breast tissue.But this sensitivity spots of abnormalities which were found as possibilities of cancer may turn to be benign.

Researchers of Hereditary Cancer Clinic, Nijmegen Medical Centre have analyzed 196 women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. The researchers say “around 83% of the MRI scans which detect a tumor were found to be “false positives”.

These alarming false health findings make those really unaffected women to take a decision of even breast removal.

“The final decision for prophylactic mastectomy is mostly determined by woman’s preference than positive scan.Breast cancer surveillance and genetic counseling are essential in decision-making,” said Dr Nicoline Hoogerbrugge, who led the research.

However, the researchers also provided evidence that the MRI scan was further efficient in finding out tumors and the developments of the tumors.

The true-positives proportion of tumor was 41%, in mammography while 60% in MRI. The two finding are not of much difference if the tumor growth was present and it is true.
“MRI, with mammography, could be more effective if both are to be performed together. But, there are possibilities to get false result,” said Dr Sarah Rawlings.

Dr Emma Pennery, the director of Breast Cancer Care clinical said: “As the MRIs can result in false positive findings, it is really hard to detect tumors in their early development in high risk patients.”
