Xian (China) Feb 3 (Xinhua) - A team of doctors has successfully carried out heart, liver and kidney transplants on a patient first time in the medical history of the country - A Chinese hospital said.

The operation took about 16 hours to get completed. Dou Kefeng of the Xijing Hospital said, “47-year-old female patient is doing fine”.

The patient was diagnosed with uraemia and liver cancer. While planning the kidney and liver transplants doctors found a dilated cardiomyopathy, a disorder of the heart muscle, so she required a new heart first.

More than 30 experts of heart surgeons and cardiologists spent more than three hours to transfer a healthy heart. Then liver experts operated for five hours before the kidney transplant. Then kidney transplantation was performed successfully.

Nitric Oxide Improves Liver Transplantation Process

Transplanted livers can get damage if blood flow is restored to the organ after the completion of the surgery. “Use of nitric oxide during reperfusion, protected cultured rat liver cells from cell death” – reported by a study published in the journal of hepatology. “Our results suggest that the liver can reduce injury through the way we reperfuse,” said Dr. John Lemasters, professor of cell and developmental biology at UNC.

Successful Kidney Transplantation in Older Patients

“Age should not prevent from being organ donors or from getting a kidney transplanted to them as the success rates are good for both older and younger patients” - a statement given by researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

The researchers compared the kidney recipients of many different ages. “An average of 17 months provided good health with the patient survival,” said Dr. Robert Stratta, at the American Transplant Congress in Boston.

“You can not say that transplanting a kidney for an older recipient is not a worthy one in the medical field,” Stratta added. “The older patients received kidneys from older donors, but they showed their health equally well,” said Stratta, who performed transplants in 76 years old patients.
