Smoking Kills Millions of People
“Five million people were killed due to smoking in the year of 2000 alone and half the deaths of the smokers aged 30 to 69” – researchers from Harvard University and the University of Queensland have calculated.
The major cause of death was cardiovascular disease. The heart disease alone killed over 670,000 in the developing counties and 1 million people in the developed countries. Lung cancer due to smoking killed over 500,000 people in the developed world. Chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), bronchitis has also killed more people.
“We must not forget that there are real people with these statistics like mothers, fathers, and loved-ones who have suffered lost up to 30 years of life because of their smoking addiction”. - Said Amanda Sandford, of the anti-smoking charity Ash.
“Smoking caused one in four deaths in Eastern Europe and North America with the people aged between 30 and 69.” – The scientific report says.
Can smoking affect your nerve cells?
It is well known fact that smoking can affect the lungs much faster. Body can function well if all your systems are healthy. Researchers found that the smoking can affect the skills and abilities too as it can affect neurons of the nervous system. “Smokers were found to perform less well in comparison with the non smokers” - said Researchers from the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
“Neurons are sensitive to oxidative damage, and smoking can causes oxidative stress which can affect organs including brain” - said Dr Lawrence Whalley, University of Aberdeen.
“The effect is much stronger in current smokers” - study published in the journal Addictive Behaviors.
The World Health Organization (WHO) released a report with the following facts about tobacco control:
- Governments get good revenues than they spend for the purpose of tobacco control.
- Most of the developed and high income countries collect 340 times more revenue in tobacco taxes than what they spend on tobacco control.
- Developing and middle income countries and low income countries they collect thousands of times more in tobacco taxes than they spend.
- Smoking in schools and hospitals are allowed in forty per cent of the countries in the world wide.
- Picture warnings on cigarette and other tobacco products are found as mandatory in 15 countries only.
The World Health Organization recommends certain strategies to control tobacco use:
Monitor the prevention of tobacco and protect people from smoke. The countries should help people to quit smoking and warn about the dangers of tobacco. Enforcement of bans on tobacco advertisements and sponsorship is too needed. Finally, raising taxes on tobacco will not only raise the income of the country but also reduce the amount of tobacco consumption.
