Severe Constipation is no more a big issue
As two new drugs show promising results
WEDNESDAY –Even the most severe forms of constipation are no more a big issue, as two new drugs show promising result.
Almost 15% Americans have to face constipation at any given time, stated Dr. Michael Camilleri, lead author of one of those two reports that published in New England Journal of Medicine on May 29. Camilleri’s reported on the usefulness of prucalopride drug on 620 chronic constipation patients.
In a small number of people constipation occurs due nerves ‘disorder and these people usually had one bowel movement after every tow weeks, Camilleri explained.
We have no idea how many Americans have to face such intense constipation but these cases are not rare, Camilleri added.
In the study it was found that in 47.3 percent of the people who were given 2 milligrams of prucalopride a day for twelve weeks had bowel movements three or more in a week if compared to those 25.8% those were given another drug. But the people who were given 4 milligrams prucalopride a day had a little lower rate of success as 46.6 percent.
According to Camilleri these results are better than with same sort of drugs that were available in the past.
In an accompanying editorial, two questions were raised about the medication and trial by Dr. Arthur J. Moss who is a professor of medicine and physiology at the University of Rochester in New York.
According to Dr. Moss, two other drugs that had similar characteristics like prucalopride had to be recalled from the markets as they could cause cardiovascular problems. The new trial gives no such indication but that was found in the other drugs at the time of their development.
Moss further adds that pre-marketing studies usually don’t give those results as often come forward after mass marketing.
However, Camilleri explained that there is not any big similarity between prucalopride and previously used drug as there is no chemical resemblance between these two. The only similarity between the older drugs and prucalopride is that they act on cell receptor that motivates cells in intestine to bring muscle contraction.
