No more dangerous biopsies of the lung now mouth test will be enough to foretell lung cancer

Lung cancer among smokers

The U.S. researchers reported that damage to mouth’s cells inside layer can foretell same sort of damage in the lungs that ultimately causes lung cancer among smokers. It was reported on Sunday.

Painful and harmful biopsies

They are quite confident, it will become possible in the coming days, that just cleaning of smokers’ mouth will predict either they are developing lung cancer or not instead of painful and harmful removal of the lung’s living tissues.

It is also possible that the procedure may prove helpful to foretell other cancers explained by Dr. Li Mao, a specialist in head, neck and lung cancer at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Cancers related to smoking

“Our study is paving a way to increase our ability to predict who has higher chances of receiving tobacco-related cancers,” Mao explained in a report. “Besides lung cancer, pancreatic, bladder, head and neck cancers, are also related to smoking”

COX-2

Mao and coresearhers wanted to acquire a way to observe patients taking a drug the COX-2 that is being sold below the trade name as Celebrex by Pfizer.

P16 and FHIT

They observed two genes p16 and FHIT that were identical to support the prevention and progress of cancer. According to Mao “There is considerable damage of those two genes long before there is cancer.”

Lung samples and mouth samples

While talking to a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Diego, they explained that they searched definite damage to these genes in lung samples and mouth samples as well among 125 long-time smokers.

Methylation

A process known as methylation was used to cease p16 gene in the lungs of 23 percent of the volunteer and FHIT in 17 percent. P16 was muted in 19% of the tobacco users and FHIT in 15% of them in duration of a month. Mao and coresearcher explained that in 95 percent of those whose genes were affected, they were affected in the mouth and the lung as well.

Easier process

This would make an easier test for pre-lung cancer than having to access the lung, the researchers said.According to researchers it would develop an easier process to examine the lung before lung cancer. It would also be functional in checking lung cancer and to find whether preventing procedures are working or not. Another group is making research on saliva test for breast cancer and examining a different kind of the HER-2 protein connected to several breast cancers.
