Colorectal cancer

MONDAY, April 14 (HealthDay News)–A new combination of two medicines may prove helpful to restrain colorectal cancer and it has also been discovered that Sutent, which is a new powerful cancer medicine may slow down the development of liver cancer.

These are the results of two studies that were presented on Monday at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in San Diego.

Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO)

According to the first report a treatment with two medicines, which were consisted of low doses of difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) in addition with sulindac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), decreased the risk of colorectal adenomas almost up to 95 percent.Colorectal adenomas are considered near the beginning indication of colon cancer.

“We, in fact, believe we are on track to make a medical resource to avoid colon cancer,”it was stated by Dr. Frank L. Meyskens, a professor of medicine at the University of California, Irving, and lead researcher of the study.

Meyskens thinks that the double medicine will be used for people who are at increasing risk for colon cancer and it will hamper the disease from progress. The two medicines can also be used to cure those who already suffering from Colon cancer and want to decrease the risks of its revisit.

375 people with a history of colorectal polyps were studied by the researchers in the phase III trial. The researchers at random allocated patients to a combination of DMFO and sulindac or placebo. The patients were examined for three years.

Adenomas

A 70% reduction in the risk of a new adenomas were found among the patients that were taking duo medicine than the patients receiving placebo.Meyskens explained that people who had higher adenomas, the risk of increasing new adenomas was decreased by 92 percent among those that were on the double medicines.

Further, patients taking the double medicines who had outsized adenomas found a 90 percent decline in their risk of increasing new adenomas instead of taking placebo.

Hepatocellular liver cancer

In the other study, the researchers explained that sunitinib (Sutent) shows effectiveness in decreasing tumor development and slowing the risk of spread of cancer in patients with hepatocellular liver cancer.

Sutent

Stuent is a part of cancer drugs’ family including Gleevec (imatinib) that has shown effectiveness against cancer and a kind of growth called gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Some recent studies find Sutent a cause of higher heart risks.According to experts cancer patients and their doctors must consider its merits and demerits.

The drug shows to work by handling the increase of blood vessels that is how this kind of liver cancer is capable to increase so quickly.
