Extreme Sports and Stunts Are Extremely Risky For Children

Extreme sports generally include activities like downhill ski racing and jumping, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snow biking, and ice climbing.
“Extreme Sports” are not just sports but include risky stunts as well. The stunts could be like trick jumps and flips at high speeds. All these stunts applied as a sports activity are more likely to cause injuries for the participants.
The” American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)” has drawn up certain strategies that would be of immense help in preventing injuries from extreme sports. “Kids watch extreme sporting events on television and they think flying through the air on a snowboard looks easy“, says Dr. Michael Archdeacon.
Kids are immature enough to understand the level of practice and hard sweating work that it takes to perform a stunt or doing risky sports. These activities generally look easy on the screen. Children normally never realize that the “extreme athletes” get injured many times during their period of learning the sports.
There exists no systematic tracking mechanism to record the injuries caused because of extreme sports. However, skiing is the leading cause of winter sports injuries. The number of people who received such injuries was counted to be 133,585 in the year 2006 alone.
Similarly, almost 127,643 people got injured because of ‘snowboarding’ and 20,390 people received various types of injuries due to ‘snowmobiling’, according to the data collected.
Strategies suggested by the ‘Academy’ would be of much help for people who intend to participate in these ‘extreme sports’. It suggests taking some light exercise for almost three to five minutes and stretching muscles slowly and gently. Each stretch should last for a minimum of 30 seconds.
One should never try to imitate the stunts as shown on the television screens. People who are doing such stunts are really professional athletes with training of many years. If children are watching these events on television the parents must explain the perfection behind these scenes.
According to the suggested strategies, one should never try playing any ‘extreme sports’ alone. It is always advised to have a coach or responsible party to look after all the activities. A partner to assist and help would also be better.
Taking frequent water breaks would help in preventing dehydration and overheating. When feeling any pain or exhaustion, one should avoid the sports. Clothing is an essential part and wearing multi-layered light, loose, and wind-water resistant play suits will help maintaining the body temperature in all types of weather conditions. Proper footwear will provide warmth and dryness along with ankle support, suggested as good strategies.
In case of falling, one should fall on side or buttocks. Natural rolling over requires turning of head in the roll direction. One must pay all attention to the weather-warnings and temperature predictions in order to ensure complete safety, according to the ‘Academy’ strategies.
