Alarming rise in pre-pregnancy diabetes in the U.S

According to a research from the state of California, there is a striking rise in the number of young and adult women who have diabetes before becoming mother.The number of such women became almost double between 1999 and 2005 as the figures suggested.

The research has been conducted by Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Research in Pasadena, California.The study has been published online during January this year and it will also be published in the journal Diabetes Care’s May issue.

Gestational diabetes

There is no other available study to examine diabetes before motherhood and this study is considered the first of its kind.However, other studies have been conducted to examine the occurrence of diabetes in pregnancy this sort of diabetes is also known as gestational diabetes and often comes to end after the birth of the baby. But it is considered very harmful to have Type1 or type2 diabetes before pregnancy.

Overweight and obese factor

According to Dr Jean M Lawrence, who is study’s lead author and research scientist at K.P.D.R.E., more and more women have to face diabetes when they reach near to their reproductive years and one factor behind is that our society is getting tend to obesity and overweight with every passing day.

Pelvic Floor Disorders among Women Have No Direct link with Age Factor

Pelvic disorders occur among women who affect women’s pelvic organs like the uterus, vagina, bladder, rectum and the muscles that surround and support them. Pelvic organ prolapses, trouble with bladder or bowel control are the most common problems associated with this.

It was a common notion that that his disorder occurs with age however a recent study has reported that the incontinence dropped organs are not just an implication of age. It found that one third of the women are some or other pelvic disorders and none of these dispersers have been carrying any direct relationship with the age factor.

Pelvic Floor Disorders among Women

There are varieties of problems associated with the pelvic disorders. Among them, Pelvic organ prolapsed, Urinary incontinence, anal incontinence are the most prevalent. Among the most common symptoms of these disorders, there is a frequent urge to urinate, or some women can see or feel a ‘bulge’ or ‘something coming out’ at the vaginal opening, or they may face urinary inconsistency. Some women also suffer from bowel problems and may lose liquid or solid stool or even face trouble controlling gas.

Folic Acid Recommended Among the Young Women

Medical professionals recommend that the women should take a folic acid supplement along with the normal diet before and during the pregnancy. If the guidelines are followed, it is less likely to have babies with birth defects. However in spite of these medical revelations, only one among the women belonging to the age group of 18-24 includes these supplements in her diet. This age group is the most productive among the women in the United States.

Food

Though folic acid is required by everyone, it is especially important for the young women of child bearing age as it can prevent the birth of a baby with serious defects in the brain and spine. Heather Hamner, a nutritional epidemiologist for the CDC’s ‘National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities Prevention Research Team’ has carried out studies to prove this. It is especially useful if taken before the pregnancy and during the first trimester of the pregnancy. In fact it is highly recommended that women of child bearing age should include folic acid in their diet.
