Schizophrenia

Abnormalities have been found in a particular part of the brain’s white matter among the patients who diagnosed with schizophrenia recently.According to the study, which was published this month in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, brain signals when pass through the temporal lobe can mix and cause such symptoms that are linked with schizophrenia. This research was conducted at The Zucker Hillside Hospital and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.

Gray and white matters

Gray and white matters form the brain. The gray matter is consisted of neurons and white matter of thread like long nerve cells which deliver messages in all parts of brain and creates links among different gray matter sections.Without proper connections brain cells can not communicate. This cross talk may give a clue why patients with schizophrenia have emotional disorder and social functioning commotions.

Spinal Cord Injury and Heart Disease Are Not Interlinked

The Healthcare Research and Quality Agency conducted some trials and came out with some good news for the Americans that are living with injury to backbone. There is no significant clinical finding as to the spinal cord injury versus risk of developing impaired carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms that manifest as distorted glucose tolerance and insulin resistance as seen in diabetes and high/low cholesterol levels of the blood affected heart functioning. In fact the spinal cord injury suffered persons are at par with those that never suffered one with respect to these conditions.

Spinal Cord

The people that had spinal cord injury and living in US is about 0.25 million and among whom about 10k of them require hospitalization every year. As known well, spinal cord injury can be due to a sudden trauma resulting from accidents or physical encounters including stabbing or thereof or even gunshot injuries etc.

Antibiotic That Effectively Combats Encephalitis, the Brain Fever

Brain fever also known as “Encephalitis” implies inflammation of the brain, is caused by ‘Japanese Encephalitis’ virus. Though there are not many instances in India, still few thousands causalities every year could be credited to it. It has high mortality and morbidity rates.

Brain

In a recent study conducted by two researchers at ‘National Brain Research Center (NBRC)’ suggest that “minocycline”, a common antibiotic may be effective to combat his disease among the children.

“Minocycline”, an USFDA approved drug, is used to treat bacterial infections including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections; acne; and infections of skin, genital, and urinary systems. It is also used to remove bacteria from the nose and throat that may cause meningitis (swelling of tissues around the brain) in others. It belongs to the class of medications called “tetracycline antibiotics”. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria. (more…)

One Can Recover Language Skills Even After a Heart Stroke

posted by admin in February 16th, 2008  Article Under: Brain, Heart   Tags: , , ,

Even after a brain stroke, one can recover language skills. A recently concluded study suggests that our system has an ability to redirect itself, when a part of our language system gets affected due to any kind of brain trauma.

Brain Strokes

Many organs and body parts heal after trauma and disease. But the brain is not so fortunate. Any kind of trauma like a stroke or a blow to the head can lead to irreversible damage and loss of certain skills. However in case of language, a part of the system may get affected, the whole doesn’t collapse.

Michael S. Vitevitch, associate professor of psychology at the ‘University of Kansas’ and an affiliated scientist with ‘KU’s Life Span Institute’, tries to understand this ability by borrowing certain tools of mathematics. He used graph theory to find out how words are stored in the human memory that even after a brain trauma, the language system stills manages to reroute itself. He compared the system with the flights which manage to run efficiently even in the case of severe weathers. The same kind of network works behind the complex system of words in a human brain.
