Atherosclerosis: An Unsolved Puzzle
“Atherosclerosis”, a disease that is considered to be major cause of cardiovascular problems and heart strokes. Because of this dreaded disease, the arterial walls attain abnormal thickness and this in turn starts blocking the narrow pipe resulting in uncontrolled blood flow.
Scientists have not yet been able to find satisfactory cures of this deadly disease though researches are on for finding out ways to prevent and reverse the disease.
Once all the pieces of this big puzzle are placed together and the scientists are able to depict a clear picture, it will help in solving the problems faced by millions who are suffering from this disease across the world.
Dr Alan Daugherty, Director of the ‘University of Kentucky Cardiovascular Research Center’ and Dr Daniel Rader, an Endocrinologist at the ‘University of Pennsylvania’ have authored an article published in the latest issue of the journal “Nature”. In this article both the scientists have provided an insight in to the “complex process of translating scientific discoveries in the laboratory into new therapies for atherosclerosis”, according to Nature.
“Atherosclerosis” is a disease process and many researches conducted have almost established that there are several factors play important role in the process. Some of these major factors are genetics, metabolism of HDL cholesterol, and metabolism of LDL cholesterol, inflammatory processes, blood clots, and blood pressure regulation.
Scientists feel that it needs much investment of time, efforts, research, and of course money in order to solve this very complex puzzle. It will also require a multi-dimensional, multi-discipline collaboration with series of clinical trials before new therapies could be developed.

Atherosclerosis is deposition of fats on the arterial walls. As more fat gets depostied on the walls, its walls get narrowed in diameter, so less blood is supplied. This means less oxygen is delivered to the cardiac tissues, leading to their damage.
This is the basic defect.
The onus lies is decreasing the lipid content.

I personally feel that high cholesterol is the main culprit for all the heart related ailments. If you can control your cholesterol then you can preven all such heart diseases in the future.
