According to a research from the state of California, there is a striking rise in the number of young and adult women who have diabetes before becoming mother. The number of such women became almost double between 1999 and 2005 as the figures suggested.

The research has been conducted by Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Research in Pasadena, California. The study has been published online during January this year and it will also be published in the journal Diabetes Care’s May issue.

Gestational diabetes

There is no other available study to examine diabetes before motherhood and this study is considered the first of its kind. However, other studies have been conducted to examine the occurrence of diabetes in pregnancy this sort of diabetes is also known as gestational diabetes and often comes to end after the birth of the baby. But it is considered very harmful to have Type1 or type2 diabetes before pregnancy.

Overweight and obese factor

According to Dr Jean M Lawrence, who is study’s lead author and research scientist at K.P.D.R.E., more and more women have to face diabetes when they reach near to their reproductive years and one factor behind is that our society is getting tend to obesity and overweight with every passing day.

The research included more than 175,000women who gave birth to babies during 1999 to 2005 in different hospitals of Kaiser Permanente in California.Among these 175,000 women 52% were Hispanic, 26% were White, 11% were Asian or Pacific Islanders and 10% were Niger.

The results of the study were as follow

  • The number of births to diabetic women was double if compared to 1999
  • There was a five- fold increase in diabetes among 13 to 19 years old that gave birth to babies.
  • Among 20 to 39 year olds with babies it was almost double.
  • Diabetes was found 40% and up among the pregnant women aged 40 and older
  • Diabetes before pregnancy was more widespread in black, Hispanic, and Asian/Pacific Islander women if compared to White women.

Diabetes before pregnancy is quite more harmful to mother as well as for baby than diabetes that occurs during pregnancy.
