565,650 Americans Will Die Of Cancer In 2008
Washington - The American Cancer Society said that death rate in the U.S due to cancer is maintained a constant decline, which started in the early 90s. However, it may still cause an estimated 565,650 American deaths in this year.

The U.S. death rate from cancer has continued a steady decline that began in the early 1990s but it will still kill a projected 565,650 Americans this year, the organization said on Wednesday. “The death rate due to lung, prostate, breast, colorectal and various other types of cancer dropped in 2005, which is the most recent year for which data were available. However the data was less compared to 2003 and 2004,” the American Cancer Society said. In 2005, there was about 184 cancer deaths per 100,000 people where as it was 186 the year before.
But there was increase in the actual number of deaths due to cancer. ACS said that about 559,312 people died due to cancer in 2005, compared to 553,888 in the year 2004. The numbers of deaths have increased in spite of fall in death rate as the population of the United States increased more.
Elizabeth Ward, co-author of the ACS report said “The decline rate was not great enough to triumph over the population increase,” said
In case of men the death rate due to cancer fell by around 18.4 %. The death rate for men peaked in 1990. In case of women the death rate fell by 10.5 % and it peaked in 1991. Cancer is second largest cause for death in the U.S, only after the deadly heart disease.
According to Ahmedin Jemal, American Cancer Society researcher, improved treatment and decline in smoking rate contributed to the fall. “The declines are due to better screening and treatment methods and also due to welcome progress towards prevention like reduced smoking rates”, he said.
The American Cancer Society estimated that there will be about 1,437,180 new cancer cases in 2008 in the U.S of which around 745,180 will be men and about 692,000 will be women. It is also estimated that there will be around 565,650 cancer deaths in 2008 of which 294,120 will be men and 271,530 will women.
The group said that the death rate due to colorectal cancer dropped by 3 % in 2005 when compared to 2004, after dropping by 6 % in 2004 from 2003. Fall in death rate due to prostate and lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women was also small in 2005 when compared to the previous 2 years.
ACS also said that the cases of Lung cancer are falling in men and it is looking to level off in women after increasing for years, the group said.

A good reason why these numbers are so high could be because of the fast food industry. A cancer causing agent is in many fried products. So in reality the fast food industry is indeed feeding us cancer.
Due to cancer so many people die each year and over governments give less importance to such major problem in the country.
These numbers are so terrible…..but if we consider the entire world then those figures will be unimaginable.
Every individual must take precautions to avoid such diseases.
That is indeed a staggering statistics. I feel that cancer is going to be the next major killer than other diseases and wars in combination. The pity is that we are still searching for drugs to cure for cancer and it is growing phenomenally.
Only our lifestyle is to be blamed for this. In today’s world, increasing technology has just made our life more sedentary. Man has become more and more lazy. Such things are bound to happen.
@vivek
I agreed with you at that point, as human beings want to facilitate his/her lives with all of accessories and making these accessories essential part of their lives, so we are facing so many new kind of diseases and health problems.
Live simple, live happy ![]()
Completely agree with you.
live simple, live happy.
These are all lifestyle diseases. Our forefathers rarely suffered from such diseases.
Take AIDS for example. It is postulated that it we contracted it from chimps. I wonder who was that stupid a** who would satisfied his carnal pleasures by using a chimp.
