Looking to start your website?? First thing you will need is a web domain. Registering a Domain is not as easy as it seems. One has to take view of several points before you buy a domain name. After all it’s the first thing that will lead the visitors to your site.

Today it has become extremely difficult to go and register for domains as there are millions of top level domains (.com, .net. .org etc) are already filling up. This makes it very hard to find a good domain name that’s short and easy to remember and the one that relates to your site, business or product.

The following are the points one should take care of while registering a domain.

Don’t Use domains that are too long. Choose a domain that is short and easy to remember. You will find that the most popular websites today are mainly of one or two word domains. It’s easy to remember them. If the domain name you are searching for is not available choose another word with similar meaning.

Try to avoid Hyphens between the words. They are often forgotten and people tend to forget the exact structure. Chances are your visitors may end up visiting a website which may be your competitor.

Try to not use Numbers in your domains.

Try to catch domains that are similar to other famous domain names. This will benefit you to get a good amount of traffic to your website.

Try to use common words with your chosen word or topic. For e.g. If your site is related to templates try template world, templates, Free templates etc. Words like free, blogs etc are most searched terms on the net.

The important thing is to avoid redundancy and capitalize on short and to-the-point words and phrases that are popular, when choosing a good domain name.

Choosing the domain name synonymous to the content of your site is more important, than any. Rightly said.

Good work!

I pretty much agreed with everything you said except trying to pick a domain similar to other famous names as it didn’t really make sense at all. Also you shouldn’t chose a name based on the topic you cover, you should chose something that is short and memorable. There are plenty of companies that don’t have names based on the topic they cover; theplanet, google, yahoo, flickr, del.icio.us, etc.
