TOKYO – Japan investigates the reason for the defect in Apple Inc.’s iPod after the emission of spark while recharging the digital music players, said a government official.

The reason for Japanese government conducting the investigation is to find out the cause why an Apple iPod nano gets overheated and emit sparks while being recharged.

An official at the trade and economy ministry, which administer the product problems, said a defect is suspected in the lithium-ion battery of the iPod Nano, model number MA099J/A.

The ministry has asked Apple Japan to investigate the cause of the incident. “It is suspected that the incident happened by the product itself,” said the official at the trade and economy ministry.

The problem was noted in January in Kanagawa Region, southwest of Tokyo, and Apple Japan reported this problem to the ministry in March. “No one was injured”, said the official.

Apple Japan refused to comment on the ministry’s statement. The iPod Nano players were sold in most of the countries, and it was not clear that where else beyond Japan the defect model iPod was sold, said Masayoshi Suzuki, the spokesperson of Apple, in Tokyo.

“An investigation has been launched. We will unveil all the information regarding the findings,” said the official. The incident surfaced on Tuesday when the government published a list of “serious accidents” assumed of being caused by consumer products.

The iPod Nano was assembled in China, but it was not specific that who manufactured the lithium-ion battery, said the ministry official. In 2006, Lithium-ion batteries have been held responsible for a series of blasts in laptops which have resulted in massive global recalls.

The Apple iPod has become a symbol of the fashion in recent years. But its sales momentum may be gradually declining. The lithium-ion batteries in Apple products have had some problems in the past, largely about the early exhaust and not about being prone to fires.

The lithium-ion battery is considered as a high-quality technology because of its ability to provide power especially in small size goods. Due to its suspected propensity to catch fire, most of the electronic companies and automakers are cautious in using it.

Lithium ion batteries, which Apple uses for its iPods, are common in consumer electronics, such as personal computers, mobile phones etc. In 2006, Sony was forced to recall millions of their lithium ion battery packs used with its own and other manufacturers’ computers due to fears they might catch fire.

Tokyo - Sony Corp, which is the 2nd largest maker of consumer appliances in the world, said that it would acquire a 1/3rd stake in Sharp’s LCD panel plant expected to be complete by March 2010. This is an effort by Sony to cope with increasing demand for flat televisions.

This is the latest move in the list of alliances made by Japanese flat TV manufacturers in order to secure enough LCD panels while having initial investments under control to cope with greater price declines.

In addition to LCD panels, the joint venture will also manufacture LCD modules. LCD modules are display panels furnished with components like LCD driver chips and backlight unit.

The move decrease Sony’s dependence on chief supplier Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea as LCD TV sales are expected to increase by 29 % this year. Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc and UBS AG forecast the shortage of LCD TV will continue in 2008.
” This will be a positive step for Sharp as it means a big buyer, which would keep the new factory engaged,” said Kazuharu Miura, analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research.

Sharp’s new LCD panel plant will use 10th generation glass substrates. These substrates can yield more panels than those of the previous generation. This will increase the efficiency of the two companies and they will be able to offer their LCD TV’s for more attractive prices.

Park Hyun, an analyst at Prudential Investment and Securities said, “Sony required an additional source of panels as the LCD TV market is growing faster than expected. As Sony increases TV production, it is quite normal to look for diverse panel sources”.

“Probably Sony will continue the tie up with Samsung. Hence Sony’s diversification plans will not affect the alliance with Samsung in a negative way,” he added.

Sony will own 34 % of the venture that will control the Sharp, being built by sharp in Sakai City, Osaka while sharp will own the remaining 66 % – the companies announced today.

Sony and Sharp are the second and the third largest LCD TV manufacturers in the world, with only South Korea’s Samsung Electronics ahead of them.

In 2004, Samsung and Sony set up S-LCD Corp., a panel-manufacturing venture which has invested about $4.1 billion in two plants to manufacture screens of 40 inches to 52 inches size.

“If costs and demand-supply conditions are appropriate Sony will think of constructing a 10th generation plant with Samsung,” said Ryoji Chubachi, Sony president.

Tokyo:

Japanese company Toshiba announced that it had agreed to purchase high-performance semiconductor operations from its rival Sony for 835 million dollars, just a day after losing to its competitor in a tough DVD format war.

The new Playstation 3 control and box are displayed at a Sony Computer Entertainment America news conference in San Francisco, California, October 19, 2006. Sony Corp said on Wednesday it will sell its microchip production facilities in western Japan to Toshiba Corp for 90 billion yen ($835 million), in their latest move to focus on their core businesses. REUTERS/Kimberly White

In spite of being tough competitors both the companies announced that they had made up a deal to form semiconductor joint ventures were 60% is owned by Toshiba Corp. and 40% is owned by Sony Corp.

Toshiba will pay 90 billion yen to Sony for its operations in western region of Nagasaki to make high technology semiconductors, including its talent behind PlayStation 3 video game console, a joint statement said.

These chip lines will be then loaned by Toshiba to the joint venture, which will start functioning in April.

Sony first announced in October that it would sell its chip facilities to Toshiba as part of efforts to modernize its operations. It would sell it manufacturing amenities to Toshiba for making the key component microchips that have been used in the production of Play Station 3. But the price at which Sony is selling to Toshiba is not available.

Sony is looking to discard non-core assets and restore its mainstay in electronics business along with the brisk sales of flat and LCD televisions and digital cameras.

The sale of the chip lines to Toshiba will help the Sony to reduce its cost of production for Play Station3 as it struggles to earn back its huge investment where it is facing tough competition from Nintendo’s Wii.

Meanwhile Toshiba will be concentrating on other growth areas such as production of semiconductors and memory chips that are used in small handy music players.

The announcement regarding the sale of chip lines came, just a day after Toshiba had lost to its rival Sony in a tough DVD format war. Toshiba announced that it would stop the production and sale of its HD DVD technology by this month, providing the way for Sony’s Blu-ray format to rule the next-generation market.

Based on the deal Toshiba will be taking over two manufacturing units—one in Nagasaki and the other in Oita—which, paradoxically, make the Cell processor and RDX graphics controller which is being used in Sony’s Blu-ray equipped PlayStation 3 game console. The plants also produce various chips that have been used in a variety of Toshiba products.

Sony is now concentrating on the production of image sensor chips which is an imperative component for digital cameras and keeping away from heavy investments for advanced chip production machines.

This Joint Venture will help the Sony to cut down its production cost especially in the manufacturing of Play Station 3 game console where as Toshiba will be focusing mainly on the production of semi-conductors and memory chips that are used as a component in small handy cameras.
