CAIRO–Researchers have found evidences for an underprivileged and sick population who were working under severe conditions which is controversial to the earlier images of the ancient Egyptian city of Tell el-Amarna that was known for its abundant wealth and prosperity, a study has found.

Tell el-Amarna remained as the capital city of ancient Egypt during the reign of the pharaoh Akhenaten, who derelicts most of the Egypt’s ancient gods in favor of the Aten sun disk and played an imperative role in a developing new and more significant style of art.

Akhenaten, who lived in Tell el-Amarna for 15 years, ruled Egypt between 1379 and 1362 BC.This ancient city was almost neglected, soon after his death and during the reign of the famous pharaoh Tutankhamen.

The remains of the ancient Egyptians in the city of Tell el-Amarna show that most of the people suffered from fractured bones, anemia, lack of growth and high rate of mortality at younger age, said the professors Jerome Rose and Barry Kemp, who led the research.

Adults who were buried in the cemetery were perhaps brought from different parts of Egypt, said Jerome Rose, an anthropologist professor of the University of Arkansas and the leader of the research.

“This means that there was an abandoned period in Egypt before the Amarna phase,” he said.”So things may not be so good for the common Egyptians and Akhenaten would have taken steps to make things better,” he added.

The art records and the paintings in the tombs of the aristocrats show a reign of abundance and prosperity, but the remains of common people narrates a different story.

Professor Rose showed images of the remains of ancient Egyptians which revealed spinal injuries among teenagers, probably due to the accidents that might have occurred during the construction work to build the city.

Researches found that 74 % of children and teenagers and 44 % of adults suffered from anemia, said Rose. The normal height of a common man was 159 cm and 153 cm among women.”Shortness of height indicates a protein deficient diet. … People were not growing to their full potential,” he said.

Further researches in the city of Tell el-Amarna would answer all the questions, said Kemp.”We have got a clearer picture of what life was like,” he told.”There was nothing to do with the intentions of the pharaoh Akhenaten, who has been good and paternal toward his people.”
