Seagate Technology” unveiled its plans for this month and on Tuesday the company announced that the new “Cheetah 15K.6 drive”, the highest performing 3.5 –inch hard drive is about to begin with shipping. This exclusive hard drive is meant for enterprise storage environments, says the company.

This new “Cheetah 15K.6 Hard Drive” will be available with the capacities of 450GB, 300GB, and 147GB. It comes with an option of ‘Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) ‘or the ‘Fibre Channel Interfaces’. The meantime between failures (MTBF) for this new hard drive is almost 1.6 million hours and the company is offering a five year’s warranty on each sale.

‘Cheetah 15K.6 hard drive’ would provide an overall sustained rate of data transfer with the speed of 164 MB per second. It has been specifically designed for transactional processing of data and its multi-functional internet applications. This new hard drive from ‘Seagate’ will offer low idle and operational power consumption rate compared to its previous versions of 3.5-inch hard drives. The rate of lowering down the power consumption in this case would be around 61% in Watts per gigabyte. Similarly, the rate of data transfer would also be increased by almost 28% with this new 3.5 –inch hard drive.

According to the company sources, Hewlett Packard (HP) is making plans to incorporate this new “Cheetah 15K.6 Hard Drive” in its Storage area network systems. HP hopes to derive many benefits with improvements in performance, reliability, power consumption, and capacity in order to facilitate its ‘Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) Systems’.”It will deliver greater overall value to our customers”, says Kyle Fitze, Director San Marketing.

Along with HP other companies like ‘Super Micro Computer’ is also considering inclusion of “Cheetah 15K.6 Hard Drive” in its ‘SuperSavers’.

Seagate would be in a position to derive advantages of existing market gaps in this field as the arch rival Fujitsu has no plans to bring a 450 GB hard drive. Fujitsu instead intends to introduce a 600GB hard drive and its development process is underway. In such a situation Seagate would be in a better position to attract customers with its Cheetah hard drives.
Companies are making umpteen efforts to offer better products for enriching the enterprise class lines and Seagate’s early entry in to this market segment will provide it a leading role.

Seagate took over “MetaLincs” in the month of December last year. The company addressed the need of software for search corporate archives with this buying. The company achieved a remarkable product range that has been offered to companies for making optimum use of their electronic archives, according to Seagate. It helps in consolidating and retrieving the right information at the right time for companies especially in cases where litigation and regulatory matters are involved.
