“Norhtec”, the Thai systems integrating company is running through the final phase before its launching the new “under $300 ultra-mini PC (UMPC)”. This UMPC will be based on the “Quanta Design”. The company is targeting the developing country markets. “Quanta “are giving final touch to its laptop, popularly known as the “Gecko Laptop”. This laptop would be running on Linux. It is a specifically designed computer with ‘small-screen –mini PC’.
The “Gecko Laptop” will come equipped with specific ‘Via C7M ULV CPU ‘which will be clocked at 1GHz. Customers would be offered an option of PATA hard disk and integrated media acceleration for this laptop. “Gecko laptop” would be featuring a complete keyboard and possibly a screen with a 7-inch display.
The Gecko laptop will run “Linpus Linux Lite” made available by the Taiwanese Linux distributor ‘Linpus Technologies’. “Linpus Lite” is an exclusive operating system for UMPC, mobile internet devices, and low cost laptops. It also features an icon-based easy mode with user interface along with the typical experience mode. For the users the toggling between modes would be far easier with just a click on the toolbar.
“Linpus Lite” runs with slower CPUs like 366 MHz and also supports well even the 128 MB DRAM along with the 512 MB hard drive, according to the Linpus. Because of this functionality and adaptability of use with slower devices this combination is going to be the best suited for several of the handheld devices with the screen sizes as low as 7 –inches and resolution as low as VGA, the 640 X 480.
Linpus Lite applies specific GNOME desktop technologies and is based on the ‘Xorg’. These technologies include hald, dbus, obex-server, vfs, and gnome-screensaver. It also combines the ultra-light, xfwm4-simple as the window manager with the xfce4 panels and other components. A complete set of specific Linux drivers makes this supportive of Wi-Fi, Wimax, HSDPA, HSUPA, Ethernet, BT, IR, and UPnP communications technologies, according to Linpus.
Norhtec President Michael Bames says that “Linpus Lite is very similar to gOS and each application is tied to dedicated icon separated by tabs classifying them in to functional area”.
The “Gecko laptop” and PC would have resemblance to many newly introduced sub-notebooks like ‘Everex Cloud book’ and ‘Asus EEE PC’. Gecko is based on exclusive Linux operating system like EEE Pc but unlike the Cloudbook and has conventional laptop trackpad.
Norhtec has an objective of creating affordable laptops for developing and poorer countries. It launched previously the ultra-thin clients including the “MicroClient JrSX” and an exclusive $100 “MicroClient Jr. PC” running on “Puppy Linux”.
Quanta, the Taiwanese computer manufacturer are also engaged in contributing to the OLPC program with its “XO-1 Laptop”. Similarly Intel has also introduced its “ClassMate PC” in the developing country markets. Another non-profit organization ‘Literacy Bridge’ is simultaneously working on an exclusive Linux based laptop for these developing markets which will facilitate creating low cost audio libraries as the ‘$5-iPod Book Audio Player’.
The “Gecko laptop” would be available in the markets sometime this year with under $300 price tag.
