Intel Plans New Atom ProcessorIntel is progressing ahead on its plans to revamp the mainstream products segment with new “Ultramobile Computers”. Intel’s “Atom Processors”, the new brand of micro-chips with low power consumption will soon be facilitating the manufacturing of ultramobile computers. The company is preparing to launch a number of new versions of the new ‘Atom Processors’ and these will be released during the first half of this year, said Danny Cheung, spokesperson from Intel in a statement.

Atom processors are actually a part of Intel’s ’45-nanometer processes and would be having a clock speed of up to 1.8 GHz. The company will also be introducing some slower versions of this processors series, details about the speed of which are not revealed by the company along with the price ranges.

Size of the new Atom processor chips would be less than 25 square millimeters even. These chips will be based on ‘Thermal Design Power (TDP) factor’ in a range of 0.6 to 2.5 watts. It is not the maximum power consumption for these chips but it is actually the maximum sustained power of the new chips, according to Intel.

Price factor is expected to be on lower side as the smaller size of the chips will facilitate the company to maintain its high margins with bulk production .Almost 2,500 new Atom processors can be produced on a single 300-millimeter silicon wafer.

The company has not announced an exact date for the launch of these new “Micro-Chip Processors”. Danny Cheung however expects that the ‘Mobile Internet Devices (MID)”that are based on the ‘Centrino Atom’ would find a place in markets sometime during the early second quarter this year.

Intel is applying the term “Mobile Internet device (MID)” to define some of its devices that are specifically referred as the “ultramobile PCs”. Some newly designed prototypes of these MIDs by Intel include features like ‘touchscreens’ or the ‘slide-out keypads’. The company is planning for these devices to be Linux based instead of Windows.

Intel has renamed its ‘Silverthorne’ as the new ‘Atom Processor’. These are single-core processors and the same would be included in the “Centrino Atom”. The company is also including the “Poulsbo chipset” in the Centrino Atom at the same time along with the wireless chipset. An official announcement about the new name of “Poulsbo” is still awaited. The company is planning to include its ‘Northbridge ‘and ‘Southbridge’ chipsets into this ‘Poulsbo chipset’ in order to minimize the size and to reduce the power consumption.

These new chips would be available in the form of single core chips and dual core chips and would serve great purposes for notebook manufacturers who are looking for low cost options like the Asustek Computers and other low cost desktop manufacturers as well. Some chips with a code name of “Diamondville” will be including dual core two chip chipsets also, according to Intel sources.

Intel coins new terms for the computers based on these new processors as the “Netbooks” and “Nettops” and these machines would be different from the conventional notebooks and desktops. The company has also formulated guidelines specifically for these products device makers in order to limit the Atom processor’s features. One of the main limitations would be not using the chips in notebooks with a 15-inch screen, says the company.

The company intends to introduce the low cost notebooks and desktops based on Atom processors in to the worldwide markets during the third quarter this year says Danny Cheung. At the same time Intel also foresees a heavy demand in future for these Atom processors to be use in many consumer electronics and other embedded appliance applications.

Intel predicts that the first time computer purchasers and the ones who are looking for a better low cost option for their second computers will find its new products much appealing.

Atom Processor is real good news.
Apart from being on the lower price, it also consumes less power so that is an add on. This is a win win situation for first time buyers as well people planning to buy a second PC. With this the price of computers will come down

This is good news especially for the fact that the price of the processors will come down. Intel really impresses me a lot on their innovation and new features that they bring every now and then. I hope this venture of theirs suceed.
