How to Improve Search Engine Rankings of your Wordpress Blog

WordPress has become so popular these days that people are looking at generating business on the internet through it. Often people who write up WordPress blogs or even design / develop their websites with the help of WordPress are looking for ways to improve search engine rankings. Here are a few ways we would like to mention that can help you optimize your WordPress blog.

Wordpress

Permalinks

A URL that links to the specific blog entry which has entered the archives section, after being displayed in the front page is called a Permalink. Very few blog hosts support this feature. WordPress luckily does. By default, WordPress indexes or names its pages containing a lot of numerals and question marks. This is a shortcoming when it comes to search engine rankings. Even if search engines do spider such links, it doesn’t happen as fast as you would want it to. It does, however, still allow you with the ability to create custom URLs, to be used in your permalinks and / or archives.

After you’ve done that, you could try writing the title of your blog, in your URL. When you visit the Permalinks section in WordPress, there’s an option, “Date and name based”. Selecting this option places the date (in the YYYY/MM/DD format) and the title of your blog post in your URL. If you’re up for it, you can even choosing the “Custom” option in order to customize the URL. We have a suggestion for you at this moment, though. Never stuff your URL with too many words or the entire title, because it becomes difficult to read. Besides, search engines might tend to overlook such links and not index them, because they’re often used by spammers.

Title of the blog and the page

It’s always suggested that you write good, catchy, keyword-like titles for the page as well, apart from just writing the title for the blog post. This becomes a good search engine optimization step. However, on the pretext of using keywords, it’s not a good strategy to target the entire blog. Choose your post titles carefully, and ensure that they’re relevant to the post you’re going to make.

Tags

Tags help search engines to crawl through your website easily. Also, this helps you in creating specific pages for your keywords. WordPress also works with a few add-ons. The Ultimate Tag Warrior plug-in can help.

Apart from the tags, Meta descriptions largely help decide the fate of your website’s ranking, or even listing for that matter, on a search engine. Take some time and write a brief description about your blog in general. Better yet, describe every post in a few short sentences, because every post essentially has a unique URL anyway.

Another thing you might want to consider is to show related posts, at the bottom of each blog post you make. Not only does this help the search engines to crawl through the other pages on your website, it also keeps the visitors stay on your website for a long time. There are ways to do this automatically as well. Click here to find a plug-in that can help you do that.

Besides, you can try ‘cross linking’ between your posts across different pages. You might have observed this in Wikipedia. Important words / phrases are highlights and have links embedded in them, which, when clicked, go to different pages within the website. These links are also known as Autolinks.

We suggest that your check the number of folders / subfolders in your website. It’s advisable to have lesser subfolders, if you want the search engines to love your website a little more. Another thing we recommend is Google Sitemaps. Google Sitemaps is a tool for webmasters, which helps Google crawl through your web pages and index your site. Besides, it lets you tell Google what pages you prefer getting indexed first.

Surprise, Surprise!

WordPress also offers you an option to do link building – well, sort of. Anytime you update, post or edit text / content in your blog, WordPress can help you notify other relevant websites about it. The feature can be found in Options >>> Writing. This is also known as ping service.

WordPress has a gift for you

WordPress has become popular, and wants to continue the streak. WordPress, hence, came to the rescue of many a blog writer. They have plug-in called as the All in One SEO Pack, which can be downloaded here. One good feature of this plug-in is the International Support, which means that you could be running a multi-lingual blog, with no extra efforts needed. Many users of this plug-in have seen significant success in their blog rankings.

The above mentioned methods are just a tip of the SEO ice-berg. There’s a lot more that you and your visitors can do for your WordPress blog or just about any website. Happy Blogging…
