Devaluation of paid links?

posted by admin in September 13th, 2007  Article Under: Internet, SEO, Web Directories

Google has become the search engine that almost everyone uses, and because of this fact there is a constant battle going on to be the top page rank on Google, especially if you are one of the thousands of people who has an online business or sells items on ebay. Because let’s face it, the people who are top rankers are the ones who get the sales and who get their items seen the fastest.

In order to gain higher rank in pages, which is based upon the web pages that your website is linked to, people are purchasing links to pages that are higher in rank to help increase their page rank and therefore get more visitors to their website.

If you do a search on the Internet for directories, you will find that there are plenty of them. Most of them require that you pay a small fee to be listed in their directory. When you look at it, it’s really no different than paying to put an advertisement in the local newspaper. But unfortunately, Google doesn’t like it and they are doing something about it.

But there is a lot of controversy about this because, if you have gmail especially, you notice that Google themselves puts ads up all over the place. Yet Google themselves are trying to stop the purchase of links to other pages.

Why is this? After all, if both parties are in agreement that they want the link to be on the website, who is Google to say that they can’t? As stated before, it’s no different than purchasing an advertisement to put in your local newspaper or magazine.

Perhaps this is simply Google’s way of trying to run the Internet. Maybe they are angry because it leaves less room on the webpages for their own advertisements?

Another thing that they are putting a stop to is the pay to blog business, or trying to anyway. For those people who are disabled or work at home because they have small children, this is really creating a problem. They are allowing people to link from their site as long as there is a nofollow tag associated with the site. But honestly, this could be the end of the pay to blog business. After all, who is going to pay for a blog link that doesn’t help their Google page rank?

Another way that work at home moms and those who are disabled are by signing up for pay per click emails. The site sends you email each day and you get so much per email link that you click on. So are they going to shut those down too?

It seems as if Google isn’t taking into account everyone that is being hurt by what they are trying to do. After all, not all the people who putting link up on their blogs and such are doing it because they are worried about page rank. There are plenty of them out there who are trying to make a little bit of money doing things at home because they can’t do it anyway else.

There are people who agree that paid links shouldn’t be allowed and they are doing what they can to help Google in rounding up the offenders. They received their Google rank by hard work and they really hate to lose it.

Then there are the people who, though they may not do it themselves, have no problem whatsoever with people selling and buying links. They figure hey, it’s their money and if the person who sold the link to them is crazy enough to divert the attention away from their own site, why not let them?

But how exactly is it that Google knows for certain that a link is clicked legitimately, without any money exchanging hands or if someone paid it to be viewed? There are several sites where you can post articles and other things and be paid for your content. One such site gives you money for your articles as well as paying you for page views. Sometimes on these pages you can see fluctuations in the amount of views your content has received, which in turn affects how much you will get paid.

Another trick of Google is to that they are allowing webmasters to see what can be consider as ‘invalid’ clicks. Yes, convincing someone to click on your site or your page a couple of hundred times is wrong, but really how do they decide what is an invalid click?

So let’s review what the implications could be if Google gets their way.

No more getting paid to blog, which has become a very nice way for people to make money. And these aren’t people who are greedy or who are lazy. These are people who are disabled, who are home with small children, and who are trying to make money in the only way that they can at the moment.

Sites that pay for content may be shut down, or contributors may lose the extra money that they receive when someone reads or views their content. Again, this is another way that those who can’t work outside the home can make a little bit of money. It’s not much at first, but as time builds up it can be a very nice income.

There won’t be any more paid to read email programs. The advertisers whose emails go out? Of course they bought the links! They are paying to have their information put out to people who have selected their venue was one of the things they would like to receive emails about. But the fact that they are willingly looking at the site has no bearing on the fact that they might be genuinely interested in the products or services being offered. Because they are being paid to look at it, it’s wrong.

Perhaps the people who have made the decision that link buying is wrong. Perhaps they are only looking at as someone is doing it simply to build up their Google rank, and not taking into consideration the fact that there are people who count on the money that programs that utilize link building and buying bring in. Yes, they are making money on the things that they do, but do you realize how much blogging and reading of emails it takes to bring in even a little bit of money? These people aren’t getting rich, but at least they can feel as though they are contributing in the only way they can to the expenses of the household.

It’s hard to tell what the future of the great link purchasing debate will be in the long run. Chances are that no matter how much Google fights it, there are always going to be people who buy links. But for a lot of people, why Google has a problem with this is a mystery.

They should consider the analogy stated at the beginning of this article with regards to the newspaper. What would happen if everyone in the newspaper got upset because they weren’t the only advertisement in the newspaper? What if the automobile section said hey, I’m the only one who is allowed to post here? It wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense would it?

So it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense those advertisers and webmasters alike shouldn’t also be allowed to do what they want with the space on their website. And if Google tries to get rid of all of the sites that sell links, there won’t be a whole lot of sites left to choose from.

That’s not to say whether link selling and buying is right or wrong, but it certainly does give the whole debate a whole new perspective, doesn’t it?

Google is definitely changing its algo. All that is happenning now is testing of different combinations of them. Once they settle on the best combinations- everything will settle down.

Their main aim is to devalue links which have been bought for manipulating PR and SERPs -. Though they have no problem if links are bought for advertisement/traffic. They just don’t want PR & SERPs manipulated.

Do a search on promotional items or promotional products

Look at the backlinks via yahoo of the Number 1 site. It sure doesn’t look like google can spot garbage paid links.

Mostly, the talk about paid links seems to be just tough talk by google since they can’t spot paid links with their algo.

Nop. Page Rank increase certainly doesnt mean increase in rankings and traffic. PR0 sites can rank higher than PR5 sites.

“When you look at it, it’s really no different than paying to put an advertisement in the local newspaper. But unfortunately, Google doesn’t like it and they are doing something about it.”

Nop. If i keep my site’s ad in a local newspaper, perhaps everyone will hear the name of my site, adding to its popularity and an increase in traffic. Same goes with adwords, if i buy 1000 clicks from google, it will bring those targetted visitors can be converted well into buyers. Whereas on the other hand, if i sped 250$ in submitting to 10 web directories, how much traffic will i get. Come to the point, I have a brand new site selling auto accessories which ships products in the US, which will bring me more sales, “Newspaper and adwords advertisements” OR “Buying links in 10 web directories”.

“But there is a lot of controversy about this because, if you have gmail especially, you notice that Google themselves puts ads up all over the place. Yet Google themselves are trying to stop the purchase of links to other pages.”

Yes Gmail and perhaps millions of other websites where google’s ads are placed. It is to provide value to the advertisers, lets say a person buys 100 clicks from google, they will place the ads on hundreds of relevant websites which includes Gmail and Orkut pages. When people click and visit the person’s site, Google charges them and pays a part to the site owners. Whats wrong with advertising for traffic ?

Why is this? After all, if both parties are in agreement that they want the link to be on the website, who is Google to say that they can’t?
================================================================================================================================================
Google is doing the best possible to ensure that they provide 100% relevant and quality information to the billion who search the internet. Google didn’t say that dont buy links. They said , “Google Will Devalue Paid Links in THEIR eyes”. If you buy links, google says they won’t support your site. If you think paid links are okay then don’t care about Google, Go ahead buy them.

Perhaps this is simply Google’s way of trying to run the Internet. Maybe they are angry because it leaves less room on the webpages for their own advertisements?

You buy links to manipulate search results. Google’s ads are there so that people can click and visit the websites. There traffic is traded. Here Links are sold which help MFA sites to rank high and thats the fundamental problem

Another thing that they are putting a stop to is the pay to blog business, or trying to anyway. For those people who are disabled or work at home because they have small children, this is really creating a problem.

Google Inc. Is not Social worker. Do genuine things and google itself will make you millions. Its darkness for those who think that they will change the Google’s SERPS by buying and selling links, you HURT google and they HURT you back. When you kick their business, can’t they kick you back.

What I mean to say is that. Forget Google. Make a Good site and advertise for traffic, Google will do its job very well. There is no point that a high quality website doesn’t rank well in Google.
