NEW YORK (AP)—A device, to disperse aimless lingerer from some place, has been introduced in the United States. The device produces a shrill, piercing and intolerable noise and it is audible to young adults and teens only. The device is becoming a hot debating issue among young people and civil rights groups as it is being considered a breach of young people’s rights.

After the debut of the product last year, more than 1000 units of the Mosquito (The device’s name) have been sold in the United States and Canada stated Daniel Santell, the North American importer of the device.

The high-pitched sound of the device is compared to an irritating mosquito buzzing and considered as unbearable as pulling of the fingernails from the flesh. Most people in their teens and early 20s can hear that sound as they have sensitive hair cells in their ears.

high-pitched sound of the device

In the countries where the device is being used it causing annoyance and unrest among civil rights group and young people particularly in the countries like England, Australia and Scotland.England’s government-appointed Children’s Commission has planned to ban the device. These groups consider it a weapon against young people’s basic rights and they are also of the view that it could bring health effects that are presently not known.

In some American cities and towns where the device (costs $ 1,500) is being planned to install they are under severe criticism and it is being considered a needless and cruel act.

Even babies and animals can hear the noise but it is disturbing and annoying only to those people who are older than 12.In the beginning it is less annoying and irritating but after some minutes it becomes quite unbearable. It is worth mentioning that the same sound is a well known download on the internet and also used by deaf adults as a cell phone ring tone.

The device was banned in the town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts when it was installed by a movie theatre owner.

Similar sort of resistance was faced in Milford, Connecticut when the city declared to install the device in a park.

However, there are also some places where the device has been installed and no complain have been found.A school area in Columbia, South Carolina mounted one on the fence of a school vehicle and another in a car parking area where students used to gather after high school playoffs are such places as no complain has been found yet against the device.

I find this astounding. I had heard about it before but it still seems very sci-fi to me. Not sure whether I approve of such methods either. There should be more acceptable ways of dealing with annoying teens, I would think.

A very interesting topic. I’ve heard about similar stuffs before but I never actually experienced one. Anyway i also think it should be banned as there are better ways to treat annoying teens.

This is unfair for the innocent people. I strongly disagree to use this equipment.
